1959 Costin Jaguar Sold

Return

The first owner of the car was the Honorable Patrick Lindsay (descendant of the Earl of Crawford, 16th century Scotland). Patrick apparently raced almost every thing he owned including his tow vehicles (I have found race results in a wide variety of cars from 1955 into the 1980’s). Patrick is described as a Gentleman, Sportsman, Racing Driver, Aviator, Auctioneer and Head of Christie's Old-Master Department.

Patrick Lindsay founded Christie's Motor Car department more than thirty years ago and was a keen VSCC racer (the VSCC run a race in his honor). He drove Maseratis, Alfas and Jaguars, but his particular favorite was the ex-Bira ERA "Remus", one of a pair of English Racing Automobiles once owned by the racing Prince from Siam.

At Silverstone in the mid-1970s, race days had their rituals, and their characters. Patrick Lindsay would fly in to Silverstone in his own Spitfire, landing it inside the track after some acrobatics to amuse the crowd. On the ground he would switch to something equally ostentatious: "Remus", the ERA Grand Prix car.

Partrick owned the car until he passed away. At that time, the ownership passed to Lady Lindsay his wife. Lady Lindsay and her son Ludivic sold the car to a music industry producer and musician who recorded Peter Green (from the 1st generation of Fleetwood Mac in the late 1960's), played on his albums and also played keyboards and guitar with The Who in the early days. Now he's a country gentleman that likes to race.

Our understanding is that this car was raced from new (1959) and we hope to have some more details shortly. The body was built in the 1950’s by William and Pritchard it is a Costin style alloy body and originally fitted to a Jaguar powered ERA car. Our understanding is the body (fitted to the ERA) was also raced from new. We do have a picture (see below) of the ERA bodied car as it was raced in the 1963 Barbon hillclimb. The body was removed from the ERA car sometime in the late sixties to late seventies. In 1979 to 1980 timeframe it was fitted the Jaguar 150S as is shown today. There is documented race history from the 80's with the current body.

It's a natural for events like the Wine Country Tour, Colorado Grand, Copperstate 1000, Monterey Historics, etc.

It is a very nice driving and strong running car. The car is presented in British racing green with brown interior.  Contact: jjunsworth@aol.com
